I think this is only the 2nd time I’ve done a Stop Press edition of the newsletter but I feel this one is truly merited.
On Thursday afternoon our very own Paula Williams won the gold medal in the shot put at the World Masters Championships in Gothenburg.
She is a WORLD CHAMPION.
She didn’t just win it, she blew the opposition away with her 4th throw, a Beamonesque effort of 13.96 to win by the impressive margin of 33cms.
This despite a less than ideal no-throw at her first attempt.
She qualified in 2nd place after the first 3 throws to join 7 other throwers for the final round of 3 throws.
The various illustrations below will show you the magnitude of her winning throw in terms of the competition as a whole and of this year’s UK rankings and the all-time UK rankings.
Paula now goes on to the 4x100m relay on Saturday if selected and then the 80m hurdles heats on Wednesday, with hopefully the final on Thursday.
I’m sure you will all join me in wishing her luck in those and congratulating her on her magnificent gold medal.
Paula made the following comment to me after the competition
“My two warm up throws were great and made me dream I could get over 13 metres in the competition . My first throw of the competition was a No Throw – it landed wide of the sector. Flippin’ great! Not the best start and the standard was high.
As the rounds progressed and I got a safe throw in Iconcentrated hard at the back of the ring.
I took a deep breath in and went for it.
As soon as the ball left my finger tips I knew it was good…I just didn’t know how good.
The ladies were all lovely and we were all supportive of each other throughout
.
It was real treat to PB at the World Championships”.
Did I really throw that far ? Blimey.
With the other 7 throwers who made it through to the last round of 3 throws
This shows the sheer magnitude of Paula’s victory with a winning margin of 33 cms.
Paula’s 6 throws, starting off with a no-throw to start with but peaking with her magnificent 4th throw
The Power of 10 All Time British rankings prior to yesterday’s victory. Paula’s winning throw of 13.96 puts her 1m 33cms clear of the second placed thrower. That’s nearly 4 1/2 feet in old money!
The Power of 10 UK rankings for 2024 before yesterdays throw of 13.96 showing a 2m 69cms margin between Paula and the next placed thrower.
