“What a team, what a club”

The Dream Team
L to R: Alex Wood, Annie Silvers, Will Hovell, Sam Lambert and Seb Hillard, who were part of the Warwickshire Team

This is my 400th edition of the newsletter.

Milestones are often a time for reflection – so I’m going to reflect.

The main reason I have produced this newsletter over the past 8 years is to make junior members and their parents aware of what the senior’s have been up to and to make senior members aware of what the junior’s have been up to, as well as keeping our vitally important coaches, officials and volunteers up to date with our many activities.

As far as I am concerned SuAAC is one entity.

It is not two clubs – a separate junior club and a separate senior club.

We are a single club of well over 600 members ( there would be more if it weren’t for a waiting list for budding junior athletes to join).

This is a staggering figure for a town of our size.

This is not a newsletter to glorify a handful of speedy road runners, or to sing the praises of our elite T&Fers, as delighted as I’m sure we all are to have them as members. It attempts to reflect on what all 600+ members have been up to.

The newsletter tries to recognise all ages, all standards and all disciplines in our wonderful sport of athletics while also acknowledging the absolutely vital contribution of our volunteer coaches, officials and the many supportive parents.

This is why, on a personnel level, my absolute highlights of the year is when we come together as this single entity at the Club Championships and the Club Awards night.

We absolutely should not underestimate what we achieve as a club and the benefits, to both the physical and mental health, that our members’ enjoy. Also, in my opinion, it is important that we acknowledge what we add to our local community.

We should, now and again, pat ourselves on the back and state that we are proud to be members of the one Stratford upon Avon Athletic club.

Finally, the newsletter would not exist without your contributions, so please keep them coming.

On to this past week’s activities.

It’s been a week dominated by three T&F fixtures : the ESAA National T&F Championships, the latest Midland League fixture and Wednesday night’s Vets T&F fixture plus two popular road races in the Northbrook 10k and Compton Verney half marathon and 10K with over 120 members, parents, officials and coaches either competing or volunteering.

There’s a report on Kate Wright’s challenging Maverick X Trail Run plus a reminder and appeal for helpers for the hugely important, in terms of fund raising, Summer Six race to be held on Friday 15th August plus another reminder about the club’s Image Permission initiative.

Take care

English Schools National Track and Field Athletics Championships

Report: Paul Bearman

The final part of the school’s athletics pathway, the English Schools (ESAA) National Track and Field Athletics Championships were held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last weekend and the 5 Stratford athletes in the Warwickshire squad Annie Silvers (300m Hurdles), Will Hovell and Seb Hillard (400m Hurdles), Alex Wood (400m) and Sam Lambert (1500m) all played their part in Warwickshire finishing 3rd in the  category C (small county) championship.

These are the 4th biggest athletics competition in the world with nearly 2000 of England’s top young athletes from 46 counties competing over two days in blistering heat.

The ESAA programme runs like clockwork by the top notch team of Officials, with heats and finals on the track and field all over the stadium throughout.

Qualifying for the championships is a tough enough ask and to step up to this national level is very hard, but once again Stratford athletes proved worthy and capable of competing against the very best athletes in England.

An unprecedented 18 new championship best performances were set that illustrated the incredibly high standard of competitors involved.

Inter boy Alex Wood was first on the track of the Stratford contingent.

“For me it was a great comeback year after the disappointment of last year’s ESAA competition when I suffered a hip avulsion fracture in the 300m. I ran a 50.67 PB in the 400 despite some questionable race modelling again but can’t complain. Amazing result in the mixed 4x100m relay to come away with a silver medal and running the second fastest time the competition has ever seen is a surreal feeling. Next year looks exciting”

Next up came the long hurdle heats and Annie Silvers competed in the 300m Hurdles and was the first of an unprecedented 3 Stratford long hurdlers at the champs.

“After competing in the 800m last year, the weekend was a new and great experience competing in a completely different event and it was amazing to run against some really talented athletes. I was fairly happy with my race apart from the penultimate hurdle when I was tired and trying a bit too hard and lost my rhythm. I came 5th in my heat in a time of 46,79s and I am motivated to work even harder for next year as I move up to 400m hurdles”.

Combined eventer Will Hovell followed in the Inter boys 400m Hurdles.

“This was my first major individual national championships, and it was such a great experience and I loved every minute of it. Unfortunately, my performance wasn’t as strong as I would have liked it to be finishing 7th in my heat in a time of 59.76s but it didn’t take away from the amazement of being there and competing..

Being on the younger side of the age group, I’ve got next year and I’m ready to put in the hard work to get to the champs again.

Following Will, Seb Hillard competed in the senior 400m hurdles.

“This event was my first time I had made it to the English Schools making it such an amazing experience. Although my race didn’t go quite as well as I hoped, finishing 6th in my heat in a time of 57.70s, it has given me fuel to work even harder over the winter training period.

Being my first season competing in the 400m hurdles I’m happy with how I have done so far this year, competing against some of the best athletes in the country. Now to focus on my final few races of the year and continue improving my performances into next season and looking forward to the ESAA Combined Events champs in September.

Sam Lambert was running probably at the height of the heat in the Inter 1500m

“The heat was a battle and I made it to the final finishing 6th in 4.08.35 but what an experience it was to make it to the final which was my main aim from last year.

To be able to be led out to the final start line by our younger volunteer athletes and Danny Tolhurst from the club was both an honour and a privilege.

The final was, as expected, tough and tactical especially having a fall coming on to the bell lap which put me off by messing up any rhythm but it happens to anyone.

After finishing 8th in a time of 4.07.22 and to come away with 8th overall in England is incredible and I will come back stronger next year for sure”.

As coaches we couldn’t be more proud of these 5 athletes ,plus Zak Lambert as a reserve, and their achievements and determination to come stronger next year but there’s no let up with the England Athletics Champs still to come and look forward to in August.

The Stratford Volunteer Army.

Report: Paul Bearman, Lucy Edwards and Danny Tolhurst:

In addition to our competitors, Carolyne Johnston put together an enthusiastic team of 22 athletes and 5 coaches/parents (Lucy Edwards, Danny Tolhurst, Becks Ledgard, Eleanor Nabney and Madeline Birch) who endured temperatures in the early 30s while volunteering.

Challenge of the day – bucket management! Their role was to collect the competing athletes’ kit and drinks and lead them from the call room into the stadium for their events. Delivering them safely to their start lines and ensuring they were well-watered and supported. It was hot and often heavy work, but excellent fun and inspirational.

The highlight of the day was the parade, where we walked out together in our Stratford AC club kit and proudly acknowledged the thanks given by the 46 counties and the thousands of supporters. We especially enjoyed meeting Denise Lewis who was pleased to join us all for a picture.

After the parade we were able to walk Sam Lambert out to his start line for the 1500m final and watch the incredibly exciting race trackside.

It was such a privilege for us all to represent Stratford AC at such a prestigious event and hopefully our young volunteers will have been inspired to compete at the ESAA champs themselves one day.

In addition Sue Mothershaw said afterwards” once again we had positive comments about the number of volunteers we provide and how smart we look. What a team, what a club”.

Other T&F stuff.

As well as the ESSA National T&F Championships featured above, the last few days has seen two of our T&F teams in action.
Midland League T&F

Some members of the Stratford contingent at last Sunday’s Midland League T&F fixture at the Coventry Godiva track.

The provisional results show a comfortable margin of victory for SuAAC but Team Manager Mike Sheppard states that there are lots of errors in these initial results but he is still confident that we secured victory.

Midland Vets T&F League

Wednesday night at the Abbey Stadium, in pretty much perfect conditions, our Vets team were in action in the latest Midland League T&F fixture.

Expertly led by Team Manager Hannah Osborne Osborne and with vital contributions from our volunteer officials, Brian & Alison Gravelsons, Daf Hawkins  Sandy Green and Hannah Osborne, with additional support from competitors who doubled up.

Random highlights from me were Kathryn Woodcock smashing through the 20 metre barrier in the hammer, Donna Allen’s continually strong finishes, irrespective of the distance run, Nathan Darby’s storming leg in the relay, which followed immediately after his mile race, Jan McLure’s PB in the 2000m race walk plus Paul Hawkins’ return to competitive racewalking following his recent knee operation

There were many other superb performances which maybe commented on in a later report

Before the Fall !!

Adam Linforth was comfortably winning the 3000m steeplechase by some 170 metres at the Coventry Godiva track on Sunday, with a fraction over 1 lap of the 7 1/2 lap race to go, when he landed awkwardly after clearing one of the barriers. The result of this was that he had to pull out of the race in considerable pain. After hopping to his car with the help of team manager Mike Sheppard, he made the relatively short trip to Warwick Hospital A&E to discover that he had broken the 4th and 5th metatarsal in his foot, meaning he will be out of action for at least 6 weeks and have to wear a boot.

Get well soon Adam.

Compton Verney Half Marathon 2025

 Report – Mark Barker

A hot, sunny Sunday in July,  it could only mean one thing: the Compton Verney Half Marathon and 10K! This marked my third year in a row taking part, this event remains one of my favourites in the calendar.

Once again, it was brilliant to see the yellow and black vests out in force, representing in both the 10K and half marathon.
Despite the forecast, we were treated to cooler, overcast conditions at the 9am start, of course, it didn’t last long, the sun broke through and the temperature began to climb.

I started alongside Nigel Chidgey and, unusually, found myself ahead of him early on.   This was my first road half marathon in a while, and I had to remind myself this wasn’t a Shakespeare Race!   Also how could I still be ahead of Nigel, if I kept up this pace, I was going to run out of steam!    Just before reaching the village of Radway, Nigel caught up with me. We had a brief chat, and then off he went at an impressive pace!

Although I dropped back a little, I managed to settle into a consistent rhythm for the rest of the race. The support along the route was fantastic, especially the kids out in front of their houses with hosepipes, happily spraying water on grateful runners as we passed by!

The marshals were superb, a big thanks to the friendly SAC faces keeping us motivated throughout.

I crossed the finish line in just over 1:49,  four minutes quicker than last year, which felt like a good result and a brilliant way to round off a cracking morning.

The race was won by Daniel Hawkins in a time of 1:12.52 and our top 3 finishers were James Cottriall (5th – 1:22.24), Ian Stevens (24th – 1:35.04) and serial half marathoner James Coy (26th – 1:35.32).

Our top 3 lady finishers were Emma Davis (2:04.38), Rachel Fielden (2:04.42) and Kate Sergent (2:27.31). The first lady finisher was Harriet Jones in a time of 1:29.49. 206 runners completed the race.

Maverick X Series

Report – Kate Wright

This Cotswolds is a race I’ve wanted to do for some time.

Last year I was injured so I have spent this year getting stronger in the gym and running up and down hills in preparation for it.

Wow what a race. Due to the blisteringly hot weather the start time was bought forward an hour, not that that made much difference as we were still running in 30 deg by the end.

There were 5 distances from ultra to sprint. I chose the middle which was 14 miles with 1660ft of climbing.

The start was in Winchcome in the grounds of Sudley Castle and then headed off into the hills.

The first 6 miles were up, so my plan was to go easy until 8 then pick it up for the last 6. The hills were so steep that it became a bit of a hike. I was near the front of the field watching a group of 5 men and First Lady running, while I plodded behind them.
I did however have plenty of time to appreciate the stunning views .

What goes up has to come down. I’m not sure which was harder. All I could think of was how bruised my toe nails were going to be at the end of the race.

1 mile from the finish I came across the lead lady looking lost. Stupidly I pointed her in the right direction and she proceeded to beat me by 46 seconds !

The whole route was very exposed with not a breath of wind and the sun beating down but I absolutely loved it and would definitely do it again.

SUAAC Image Permission

The club are in the process of updating our Comms strategy for all our public facing channels. Website, Instagram, Facebook, Newspapers etc.

A critical part of this is ensuring we have people’s permission to use their images, if required.

When you completed the registration process to join the Club, you will have selected your options but we have taken the decision that we should conduct an annual review, in case people’s circumstances change.

If you DO NOT wish for your image to be used as part of the Club’s public facing strategy, please email Carolyne Johnston for the juniors at juniormembership@suaac.co.uk  or Robin Langhorn for seniors at seniormembership@suaac.co.uk

You will then be added to a group that the Executive have visibility of, thus ensuring your image is not used.

Northbrook 10k
