Our very own World Champion.

Paula Williams on top of the podium
And looking pretty pleased with herself. As well she might be.

Pride of place this week goes to Paula Williams, who despite what this week’s Herald refers to as her travel chaos in getting to Florida, still managed to win gold in the shot put at the World Maters Indoor Championships. She also picked up a silver as part of the GB 4x200m relay team. I still struggle to type 200m next to Paula’s name. Paula was also 7th in the 60m and 5th in the 60m hurdles. All in all a truly superb World Championships for her.

We’re all proud of you Paula.

Jamie Hall is absolutely flying as he prepares for this year’s Stratford Marathon. Having knocked 30 seconds – that’s a big chunk for a 5k –  off his PB for 5k a couple of weeks ago, reducing it to 15:36, he took on the Gloucester Half last weekend finishing in 3rd place with a 2 minute PB time of 1:12.22. Superb.

There’s a reminder for you to enter the upcoming Warwickshire County Track & Field Championships  which will be held over the weekend of Saturday 10th May and Sunday 11th May 2025 at the Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton. Entries close on 18th April
This will not be extended, so don’t wait and enter now.

Just to prove that the T&F season is upon its there are also details of the upcoming Midlands Counties T&F League fixtures. Why nor give it a go. You will not regret it.

73 seniors’ completed this month’s Shakespeare race on a glorious Wednesday evening, starting and finishing in Tiddington with the in form Jamie Hall  winning. The first lady to finish was Kate Wright.

It’s always fun to hear what Ava and Billy Sheppard get up to on their annual jaunt to the Bournemouth Bay Run. This year they were both able to knock just under a minute off their 2024 times. Well done both.

Everything comes to those who wait and as if to prove the point Abbi Cooper, Tilly Campbell and Niamh Hillard finally got their hands on the ladies U20 shield that they one at the  Midland Counties Cross Country Championship back in January.

Finally there are a couple of photos of a group of our juniors training on the Welcombe Hills last Sunday.

We’ll hopefully have a report next week on last Saturday’s Road Relay Championships at Sutton park.

Take care and enjoy the sunshine.

Paula Williams

World Champion

The 10th World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships came to a close in Gainesville, Florida last Sunday. Over eight days of competition there were 38 new World Records and 120 new Championship Records with over 3,700 athletes from 97 nations competing.

One of those competing was our very own Paula Williams.

If you read last week’s newsletter report you will know that her adventure got off to a somewhat bumpy start due to Heathrow Airport being closed on the day of her departure.

After the most tortuous of journeys she finally managed barely 5 hours sleep before competing in her 60m heat where she came 2nd to qualify for the final, finishing in 7th place.

At this time her luggage still hadn’t arrived. It arrived a couple of days later.

After a few of days rest it was onto the shot put.

Going into this event she was nervous but knew she was in contention for a medal especially if she threw close to her personal best.

Her warm ups went well and her first throw saw her in second place throughout the competition. She threw a big one in round 5 but self no throwed it thinking it wasn’t good. It had been very good and would have put her in the lead.

In the final round she threw 13.62m and moved into first place. The German competitor, who had been in the lead since the first round, didn’t improve her distance and Paula won the gold medal.

It’s definitely worth repeating.

And Paula won the gold medal !

She already held the World Masters outdoor shot title as well as the European indoor and outdoor titles and so she completed the quartet of major masters titles. A truly remarkable achievement.

It was then onto the 60m hurdles where she got through her heat in 2nd place but her left glute was causing her discomfort meaning she couldn’t really turn her legs over in the final, finishing in 5th place. She said she found the hurdles disappointing. Coming 5th in the World Championships…..disappointing…..really…most of us would kill for that.

Her final event was the mixed 4x200m relay, running leg one. Those who know her know how she feels about anything over 100m. It would be fair to say that 200m is somewhat outside of her comfort zone. Understatement.

The team to beat in the relay were the Americans who fielded a very strong team and were indeed the winners but the GB team managed 2nd place and a team silver.

Paula was understandably delighted with her gold and silver world medals, as well she might be.

Her room mate Janelle Quinn from Rugby and Northampton won 2 silver medals for relay.

Paula commented that she had learned so much from these World Championships and realised she has things to work on for the future.

She went on to thank Stratford AC for all the support she had received along the way and during the competition.

Paula helped the UK finish 2nd to the hosts in the final medal table with Germany in 3rd place.

Better late than never I guess.
Her luggage finally arrives.

Gloucester Half Marathon

Report – Jamie Hall

I’m coming towards the end of the marathon block and in the last few weeks I’ve raced to see where the fitness is at.

A couple of weeks ago, I raced Podium 5k, which was an incredible event and one I would definitely recommend. It was super fast and the aim was to run sub 16. Fortunately, everything seemed to come together and I ran 15:36 which was a 30 second PB. I definitely feel like I’ve peaked in the 5k.

On Sunday, it was time to test myself over a longer distance. I hadn’t fully tapered for this one and I had no expectations heading into it. The biggest challenge of the day was waking up early after the clocks going back and trying to get the porridge down before the drive to Gloucester.

At the start, like everyone, I started off a bit too quickly and I needed to decide whether to stick with the front group or to ease off and not blow up.

The winner (Leamington AC runner) was miles ahead of the front pack so I was in a group running for 2nd and 3rd. I decided to commit and ended up going through the first 5k in 17:10.

At the half way mark, one runner decided to head off into the distance and this broke the pack and I was left with a Wolverhampton runner to battle it out for 3rd place.

We got onto the canal path with 4k to go together and I was feeling strong so decided to pick up the pace and managed to make a gap.

I spent the last kms trying to hold on and not look back to give him hope that I was tiring. I managed to hang on and finished in 3rd place.

With it being a competition race, I hadn’t been paying attention to the time and when I stopped the watch I realised I had ran a 2 minute PB in a time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 22 seconds. I was delighted with the time and to get on podium made it even better.

Fingers crossed the PB streak can continue and the next one will be the marathon.

The Midland Counties Track & Field League

Just to prove that the T&F season is truly upon us, below are details of the above. The fixtures’ really are great fun with great camaraderie while also being competitive.

Why not give it a go. You will not regret it

Hello everyone,

With the summer season just round the corner, it is time to think about the Midland Counties Track & Field league!

This is the main league competition that Stratford AC contests for the Senior age group.

Everyone from the U17 age group upwards is eligible to take part, with 2-3 athletes competing for points across the full range of track and field disciplines for both men and women.

These matches are conducted in great spirit and are always a fun day out with fellow athletes, officials & coaches from all parts of the club.

In recent years we have fielded athletes aged between 15 and 75, so this really is a league for all ages.

For every match we have 86 scoring slots to fill. We also have to provide at least 6 officials. Thie means we need a big squad and, with matches invariably decided by a handful of points, every performance counts.

This year we will be competing in Division 3 (Southeast), up against Abingdon; Banbury; Coventry Godiva; Daventry; Kettering; Leicester and  Solihull. Most matches will be just down the road in Banbury which should simplify planning.

There will be four standard divisional fixtures and one pan-divisional “technical events” match. The dates are below – please note that some are Saturdays and some are Sundays:

17 May (Saturday) – Banbury

15 June (Sunday) –  Burton (Technical Events only)

13 July (Sunday) – Banbury

02 August (Saturday) – Banbury

30 August (Saturday) – Abingdon

All run, jump & throw disciplines will be contested in the four regular matches but 15th June fixture will feature only Hammer, High Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, 400m; 100/110m Hurdles; 400m Hurdles & 3000m steeplechase. All five matches will contribute points to the overall league competition.

Younger (& older!) athletes just need to be aware that this league uses senior throwing weights and senior hurdle heights. For these disciplines, our athletes’ participation is therefore always subject to a sense check as to suitability for the individual.

At this stage, I simply want to establish if you are likely to be available to compete for the club on some/all of these 5 dates, particularly 17 May. You should find all relevant dates on Spond, but please feel free to email me direct if that is easier. Please also let me know if there are particular events you will prefer to contest.

This is a competitive league, so our goal is to field a strong a squad as possible. However, please do not hold back for fear you are “not good enough.”  It is normal for events to feature athletes of  a wide ability range, and more often than not we end up with unfilled gaps in the squad.

Thanks

Mike Sheppard

Ava and Billy Sheppard enjoying the sunshine

Bournemouth Bay Run

On the 23rd March, the Sheppard’s once again made their annual trip down south for the Bournemouth Bay Run.

The weather was perfect with lots of lovely sunshine to warm  their running spirit.

U15 Ava and U13 Billy were determined to beat their time from last year so made their way to the front early!

This year the 5K was full with 552 runners taking part and no entries on the day. There was a slight change to the course too, due to a recent cliff fall however they still had a beautiful view of sand and sea either side.

Determination paid off for them both and they shaved just under a minute off their times and placed 31st and 36th out of 552.

Not too bad for a jog by the sea! Thanks Bournemouth – see you next year for another medal!
