This week we kick off with a report from Paul Bearman on the Warwickshire County Schools Combined Events Championships, with 26 of our athletes competing, probably the biggest number we’ve ever had involved. Paul finishes his report by saying ” It is the sheer quality and superb performances of everyone who competed that is so impressive and also thanks to all our excellent coaches who have trained the athletes to this level of performance”.
Enough said!
Kate Sergent, the club’d new social secretary, kicks of her tenure with a couple of Save the Date notifications. They’re in my diary already.
Club member Mary Reeves has submitted her report on her Cape Town Marathon and excellent reading it makes.
As part of her DofE volunteering, Lucia Ogilvie-Putt has sent in another of her tasty and healthy recipes. Enjoy.
There is an important message of upcoming Warwickshire Road Race League (WRRL) fixtures form Mike Hayward plus a brief report on the the latest of these, the Ryton 5.
Our excellent coverage in The Stratford Herald continues this week due to the diligent effort of Clare Goodwin our press correspondent. Keep up the good work Clare!
This Sunday sees the Hilly 100. It’s true to say that this is a truly unique event and one that takes a huge amount of effort to organise. Good luck to those of you competing and huge thanks to those who have helped organise it and also to those helping out on the day. It’s looking like the weather might be a bit cooler.
The Warwickshire County Schools Combined Event Championship
Report – Paul Bearman
Over the years this has been a key part of SUUAC junior athletes’ development and many have gone on to be selected for Warwickshire in the ESAA regional and the national champs like Will Hovell and Seb Hillard did last year.
The junior’s philosophy has always been based on multi events, as I’ve never believed that a young person’s development should be hampered by specialising too soon and that “having a go” at events gives everyone the opportunity to develop their skills as they too develop physically and mentally. It’s been proven many, many times that the events a young person starts off being good at, given the opportunity as we do in the club, can and does change.
Schools have the responsibility for sending the athletes to the champs and as usual the Warwickshire selectors were pleased that I and via some keen parents, badgered some schools to get our athletes involved, otherwise they would have missed the opportunity to compete and, by my reckoning with 26 of our athletes who competed in the schools CE, it’s probably the biggest number we’ve had involved.
As coaches we’re absolutely thrilled with our current cohort who were selected by their school to represent them and what a terrific effort by everyone.
After finishing in the top few positions in the various age groups, 8 of our athletes have been selected in the Under 15, 17 and Senior Warks team to compete in the Midlands Regional Champs on 27-28th June in Derby.

A special mention for Imogen Brooks who finished 2nd in the Minor Girls but they don’t compete in the regional champs.
Lucia Ogilvie-Putt reflected “it was a lovely sunny day, and everyone did really well. Everyone was buzzing to be there as many people had never competed in combined events before. We were so pleased with the results for my school King’s High; we won every age category as a team and I was thrilled when I found out that I came 2nd! I was especially pleased with my long jump as I got a PB. Overall, it was a great day, and I am looking forward to doing it all again in the next round”.
Toby Wilkinson also looked back on his day, “I was really pleased to finish 3rd in the Year 9 boys in my first combined event competition. I was a bit disappointed with the hurdles but I was relieved to at least get across the line unharmed after only 2 training sessions and my performance was about where I expected for my 3 field events (shot, high jump, long jump). I didn’t have much competition in my specialist event the 800m, but overall I think it was a really solid start and definitely keen for more opportunities to train hard in all the various events to improve and compete in combined events”.
It’s the sheer quality and superb performances of everyone who competed that is so impressive and also thanks to all our excellent coaches who have trained the athletes to this level of performance.
Roll on the Regional Champs but there’s a lot of hard work before that.

Cape Town Marathon
Report – Mary Reeves
Last year I competed in the New York Marathon, hoping to achieve the qualifying time for Age Group World Championships this year in Cape Town. Not only to compete, but to go back to S. Africa, where I had lived for 10 years and so catch up with some special friends.
Unsuccessful on race day, 3:59, over by 10mins but then earlier this year received an email, I had qualified.
As part of the age group championships, with 1800 runners. Some special treats, firstly on race day, in the first wave from the beach front start. Started, perfect conditions, bit of cloud, no wind temperature about 15deg.
My coach had very carefully looked at the course, all my running numbers and worked out a plan for the day: first 10km bit more hilly, flattish until 30km where the biggest hill was, then downhill!
Set off, felt good and maintained a good pace but the ups and downs continued.
The sun came out, lovely blue sky, but hot … lots of water at the aid stations, every 3km.
Not a lot of crowds most of the way but at the half way, 21km, on the top of a hill, Rondebosch, with amazing views of Table Mountain, great cheers and encouragement.
Now to head on to ‘the hill’ … which was a cobble road, through Company Gardens … over 1km, but more cheers keeping me running.
That’s where my quads hurt!
The down hill, with a few ups, and at 35km I could see the stadium … the finish line but the route went away from it and along the beach. That was so mentally tough … running along, away from the finish, having no idea where the turn was. I succumbed to a few short walks, but calculated I could still get within my goal time.
Eventually I got to the turning point, then headed back to the finish. Turned the corner to the blue carpeted finish channel. I did it, within my goal at, 3:47.
Before receiving the medal I had a chocolate ice cream, as well as fruit and drinks.
Then more age group treats, another medal and into the area where there was an amazing selection of hot food, including chicken curry, hot dogs, desserts and drinks.
I spent a while sitting in the sun, looking at the mountains, enjoying the atmosphere.
My coach informed me, I finished in top 10% of age group and 11.8% of females.
So, I have achieved this year’s qualifying time. Next year the championships is in Tokyo. They are changing qualification to ranking, so now I have to wait to hear if I have qualified…. will it be Tokyo 2027.
Lucia’s Latest
Lucia Ogilvie-Putt has been a member of SUAAC for 3 years. As a contribution towards her DofE volunteering section, she has, for the past few weeks, started a section in the newsletter all about health because she wants to help all of us to be your best selves.
This is her latest recipe.
Hi everyone,
This week is all about eggs.
Eggs can be cooked in many different ways and are good for us as athletes.
Here is my favourite way to have eggs.
Charcuterie omelette:
Ingredients:
3 eggs
Butter
Your favourite salami or chorizo
Method:
Place a knob of butter in a frying pan to heat up.
Cut up your favourite salami and chorizo and fry it in the butter.
Whisk 3 eggs in a bowl and check for shell.
Once the butter is bubbling add the eggs.
Cook for 2-4 minutes then flip and cook for 1 minute more.
How does this help us as athletes?
Eggs provide protein to help our muscles repair after training. Eggs also contain vitamin D to help the immune system. The salami and chorizo add extra protein and salt which needs replacing when we sweat.
Thank you for reading!
Lucia
Warwickshire Road Race League (WRRL)
A message from Mike Hayward.
Entries for the WRRL fixture being organised by the City of Birmingham Striders (COBS) on the evening of 19 August 2026 opened on Monday 25th May.
The COBS Summerfield 5k race takes place at 19:00 in Summerfield Park in Birmingham, just west of the city centre.
As a club, we are keen to promote the WRRL and secure as many team points as possible, with six female and male athletes counting.
Unfortunately, with there being lots of interest from across the 22 Affiliated Clubs and restrictions on numbers, it is often difficult to secure a place, with last week’s Ryton race and the next two races being ‘sold out’.
So if you are interested please book early.
Information about the WRRL fixtures can be found on their Facebook page or website.
