Top 5 domination no less!

Tom Fisher, Charlie Cassells and Jasmine Mothershaw.
A varied week this week. I like varied weeks.

We start at last Saturday’s London Mini Marathon trial races at Stourport on Severn, where Tom Fisher and Charlie Cassells qualified to represent the West Midlands in London next month. Although Jasmine Mothershaw didn’t qualify, she improved considerably on her time of last year.

There’s then a piece that I have written extolling the virtues of our club.

Sarah Odell has sent in a report of her Ironbridge Half Marathon, where she was joined by Kate Sergent and Bronwen Mansel. Kate was competing in this just a couple of weeks after her gruelling Grizzly Run in Devon, despite her being a year older than she was then !

Graham Hill reports on his successful run in the Ashby 20, as he prepares for the London Marathon with fellow club member Drew Sambridge also competing.

Rising junior star Rafe White completed his seemingly never ending XC season with a superb performance at the National Primary Schools XC Finals at Stoneleigh Park. Meanwhile masters athlete Mike Hayward was thoroughly enjoying himself, as well as performing superbly, at the British Masters XC Championships in Wales. This despite it being only his 3rd XC race after a 40 year break from athletics. Well done to both Rafe and Mike.

April 27th sees the start of the club’s free to enter C25K group. Please spread the word about this wonderful initiative.

The results from last Saturday’s local parkrun were a joy to behold, with the top 5 finishers being club members aged between 16 and 18. The future looks good.

Finally, Clare Goodwin continues her good work as our Press Correspondent with more coverage in this week’s physical and on-line editions of the Stratford Herald.

Good luck to our junior’s who will be running in the Road Relays at Sutton Park in Birmingham on Saturday and also to our ladies team at the same event. Sadly no men’s team this year. Good luck also the the 30+ members who will be competing at The Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton on Sunday at the T&F Season Opener.

Take care.

London Mini Marathon West Midlands Trials

Report – David Jones

Three of our junior members journeyed to Stourport on Severn on a glorious Saturday morning to compete in London Mini Marathon West Midlands Trial races.

Qualifiers at this event will be given the opportunity to represent the West Midlands at the London Mini Marathon, held the day before the actual London Marathon where they will hopefully cross the iconic TCS London Marathon finish line and receive a coveted Mini Marathon medal.

The TCS Mini London Marathon championships gives the UK’s most promising young athletes the chance to compete against the best new talent in British road running.

Over the years, the event has launched the careers of international athletics stars including Laura Muir, Keely Hodgkinson and Josh Kerr – not to mention Sir Mo Farah, who won the Mini Marathon three times.

First up was Charlie Cassells competing in the U14 race. Charlie has just completed a successful cross country season and so the race came at an ideal time for him.

He was placed 5th as he completed the first of two laps in this 2.6k race. Showing maturity beyond his years he maintained this position throughout the second lap. As he entered the finishing straight, in 5th place, knowing that a top 6 finish should be enough to see him qualify but that a top 4 place would guarantee qualification, he moved up a gear to overtake the 4th placed runner and finish in 4th place. Job done.

Jasmine Mothershaw, competing in the U16 race over the same distance, wasn’t able to qualify but her time was a considerable improvement on her time in the same event last year.

It was then the turn of the U18’s with Tom Fisher on the start line. Tom is another runner who is coming off the back of a superb Cross Country season.

Approaching the end of the first lap he was in 4th place. As he started the 2nd lap he moved up in to first place. Any concerns that he may have made the move to early were allayed as he continued to lead from the front for the whole of the 2nd lap.

Tom was eventually pipped on the finish line by Gabriel Wagstaff of Bromsgrove & Redditch to finish in 2nd  place but having comfortably qualified to compete in London on 25th April.

And I think to myself what a wonderful club

It’s 6:45 pm last Thursday. I’m standing in the middle of the infield at the track, helping to coach a group of U11s. I look around me and see four groups of young athletes, some 70 in total, plus a dozen coaches. All of the athletes’ doing what their coaches ask of them, maximum effort. In the younger groups friendships are being forged, in the older groups existing friendships strengthened, both mental and physical health is being improved, no phones, no obesity, no social media and, most of all, they are really enjoying themselves. Throw in a lovely sunset and a glorious red sky and I think to myself, life doesn’t get much better than this.

Tuesday night and it’s something similar only the weather is awful but this hasn’t affected the number of attendees, indeed there are well over 70 young athletes, predominantly T&Fers but with a group of super quick, slightly older endurance athletes and, as was the case on Thursday, friendships being forged, friendships being strengthened and much enjoyment all round.

I wasn’t able to make the Senior’s track session on Monday, but I am guessing that the picture was something similar, with 40-50 senior members taking full advantage of what the track has to offer and being expertly led by a couple of volunteer coaches and yes, you guessed it, friendships being forged, friendships being strengthened and much enjoyment all round.

On the other side of the track, as was the case on Thursday, a group of our committed masters/vets athletes doing what they do, training hard and enjoying themselves. On one side of the track you have sprint specialists, on the other side several who are training for 26.2 milers this Spring. I’m guessing there might even have been a couple of hardy racewalkers

Wednesday night’s social runs for Senior members are something similar, a group of like minded people enjoying themselves while keeping fit, both mentally and physically.

According to Spond we are a club of some 660+ members. A staggering figure, with an age range of, stop me if you’ve heard this one before, of 8-80+.

This past week tells me, as have many weeks and years before, that I’m a member of a pretty special club, one that is totally reliant on the positivity and participation of it’s membership and the immense support of it’s many volunteer coaches, officials, helpers and parents, without who we just would not be able to function.

I think it’s sometimes worth reflecting on the fact that our club really does give so much pleasure to so many people, young and not so young and, in doing so, improves immeasurably both the mental and physical wellbeing of all of those involved.

You can’t really ask for more than that can you ?

Kate Sergent and Sarah Odell

The Ironbridge Half Marathon

Report – Sarah Odell

The Ironbridge Half is always a favourite of mine but picking up an injury 5 weeks before was not in my plan.

Not having run for 4 weeks, a week before the race I could finally put a shoe on without taking a sharp intake of breath,

However, I decided to run but with only 2 runs before the race, a total 8 miles was all of my training!

Due to a landslide on the normal route, the start and finish were slightly different from previous years.

The course starts in Telford Park then follows the Silkin Way to Ironbridge, then a loop around Ironbridge, over both bridges then back on the Silkin Way and back to Telford.

The first half is mainly flat with a slight downhill, then from around 7 miles it gradually gets progressively hillier until a last final climb up to the park.

Kate Sergent and I ran together for the first 5 miles then I decided that my foot felt ok so I pushed on. My legs decided to shout at me around mile 10, so the last final few miles was a test of mind over legs.

I was appy to finish in one piece, Kate did fantastic as always, finishing 2nd in her age group.

Bronwen Mansel 1.39.
Sarah Odell 2.16
Kate Sergent 2.28
Graham Hill

Ashby 20

Report – Graham Hill

This was the second time of completing the Ashby 20. Last year I completed the race in 2h:54m but this year with it in mind for my London Marathon training, which appears to be the case for loads of runners doing this race.

Well Ashby 20 went well, with the weather being perfect. I set my pace as 5:25m/km so that I could be in and around the 2h55min mark, which I ran in 2025.

I arrived in good time with a gentle 1km warm up (and a quick chat with fellow club member Drew Sambridge).

I set off with a general pack about 1/2 way back so as not to get going too fast, which worked well for the first 1 km and I settled into a nice 5:15m/km pace which did not change too much apart from those hills 🙂

I managed to keep a good average pace and with 4 miles to go,I could see that I was well within the 2h:55m mark, which helped over the last few kilometres to get me up the last few hills and into the last 800m down hill and onto the finishing area and crowds.

I crossed the finish line in a time of 2h 47min 24 seconds, so an improvement of 7 mins from last year and a good marker for London. I then joined the queue to receive the drink, food goodies and the 2026 hoodie.

I’m not sure what pace I can do another 6.3 miles in but there is hope I can drop under the 4 hour mark at London, depending on the amount of runners and getting into a nice pace.

Drew finished in 2:11.21 to finish in 41st place out of some 1400 finishers

A few days recovery and then back onto the Garmin training plan…..at least it is warmer and lighter in the evenings now !!

Rafe White in full flight

The National Primary and Cross Country Finals

Stoneleigh Park

This event was first first held in 2015 at Belvoir Castle and attracted around 800 entries. Last Saturday it attracted over 1400 entrants, one of who was our very own Rafe White.

Rafe capped off what has been a really impressive XC season by finishing 56th in his Year 6 race, a race that attracted the largest field of the day

His parent’s commented ” the weather was lovely, bright sunshine and incredibly warm. Glorious spectator weather but it made for quite a gruelling run, especially with a long section of uphill drag!
We are incredibly proud of his performance”.
Mike Hayward

The British Masters Cross Country Championship

Faenol Estate near Bangor in North Wales.

Club member Mike Hayward thoroughly enjoyed his day out last Saturday at this event. He reports that the weather was beautiful, the location stunning and it was fantastic to watch the youngsters in the schools/international races.

He states that the number of participants in his race, which combined all the women and over 65 men’s categories was quite small but a lot of fun!

He ended up 5th in the V65, with three Welsh athletes in front of him and he felt really proud to have worn the vest and represented the club at this event.

This was only Mike’s third cross country race after a 40 year break from athletics and although he didn’t know anyone, he was really heartened by the very friendly group of enthusiastic runners.

Stratford Parkrun

Last Saturday’s local parkrun results were pretty impressive, with the Top 5 paces being occupied by 5 of our younger members.

That’s pretty impressive.
This week’s Stratford Herald celebrates the success our junior members at the recent English Schools Cross country Championships in Liverpool.
